Shortly after the earthquake hit Haiti earlier this month, Cuban doctors and paramedics arrived in the country and established 16 surgical teams and 14 operating rooms to provide immediate care to victims. A Cuban Foreign Ministry report indicated that they had seen 20,095 patients and performed 1,954 surgical operations by January 22. There are 417 Cuban cooperation staff members serving in Haiti today. Over 240 Haitian medical (fifth-year) students residents in Cuba have joined them, the text added. Cuban doctors are currently working at 21 healthcare facilities, including hospitals in Port of Prince and other departments. They are being supported by specialists from Venezuela, Chile, Mexico, Colombia and Canada, and 17 nuns, mainly in the capital city. Cuban medical cooperation programs in Haiti had been undertaken in 1998, right after hurricane George devastated the country, and have been further implemented ever since. A local press report said that Cuban doctors have been working in tents and even out in the open until the early hours of the morning. Cuba and Norway signed a bilateral agreement in Havana to supply inputs, devices and pharmaceuticals to the Cuban medical staff in Haiti. Norway’s financial contribution amounted to 885,000 U.S. dollars, the report indicated.
